The Hydroelectric Dam
Built from 1922 to 1926
When it was completed, the dam was the largest in Europe. It stands 61 meters high, measures 54 metres thick at its base, and 5 metres wide at the crest.
Its construction transformed the landscape forever. The once fast-flowing River Creuse, celebrated by the Impressionist painters, disappeared beneath the rising waters, submerging ancient bridges and watermills. In its place emerged the largest lake in the Centre-Val de Loire region, covering 312 hectares and stretching 17 kilometres.
Guided tours of the dam are organised regularly, offering visitors a fascinating insight into its history, engineering and its continuing role in hydroelectric power generation. Website to visit
